Tacoma Art Museum Unveils New Wing

(Tacoma, WA) Since its founding, the Tacoma Art Museum, has always publicly displayed its deep community roots.  Additionally; it has always embraced the State of Washington, and, the Northwest Region.  For this reason artists of the Northwest Region, have always looked towards, the Tacoma Art Museum.  Interestingly enough, the view of the previously mentioned museum, will now include a new wing.  This new wing is officially named, the Rebecca and Jack Benaroya Wing.  Additionally, it will house and showcase, the Benaroya Collection.  Everything will open, to the general public, on January 19th, 2019.

On January 19th, 2019, a 6,595 ft² building expansion will be unveiled, to the general public.  4,800 ft² of the aforementioned total new space, is gallery space.  Additionally, it is said that this new space, strengthens an already existing visual connection.  The current visual connection is between the urban backdrop that; can be seen from the north end of the museum, and, the Tacoma Art Museum itself.  Furthermore, the strengthened visual connection, is the vision of architects.  To be precise two architects.  Tom Kundig, and, Kirsten R. Murray are those two architects.  Tom Kundig was the lead architect, for this project.  Specifically and for the new wing; Tom Kundig and the Tacoma Art Museum, wanted the design to also be a strategic effort, around a few things.  Sensitivity to scale, lighting and protection of the art are those strategic things.  The gallery space, which is the end result, is based on a modular casework.  Additionally and the latter, allows for moveable temporary walls.  These moveable temporary walls; allow the art curators, at the museum, to present the Benaroya Collection, in several ways.

Architect Tom Kundig did release a press statement.  Through a press statement, Mr. Kundig said the following.  “With the Benaroya Wing, I’m most excited about the opportunity to break down traditional thresholds between the museum and the public.  The new vista gallery is designed to entice people inside to view the Benaroya Collection by offering a look into what’s happening inside the museum.”

To end, this particular museum, Tacoma Art Museum, was founded in the year 1935.  Additionally, it is located on 1701 Pacific Avenue, Tacoma, WA 98402.  The website is www.tacomaartmuseum.org.  The Tacoma Art Museum showcases art and artists from the Northwest Region.  Additionally, there are more than 3,000 works of art that, make up the museum’s permanent collection.  As previously stated, the Tacoma Art Museum has a new wing.  This new wing is officially named, the Rebecca and Jack Benaroya Wing.  The aforementioned museum wing, will house the Benaroya Collection.  Lastly, everything will be opened to the general public, on January 19th, 2019.
