Annapurna and MGM Unveil United Artists Releasing

(Los Angeles, CA) United Artists Motion Picture Studio, was once a movie studio.  In fact it is said that, if it was still open for business today, it would be 100 years old.  Interestingly, the iconoclast status of the aforementioned movie studio, is still vibrant today.  So much so that, it has inspired a joint business venture, between, two established movie studios.  Recently; Annapurna Pictures, LLC, and, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Inc. (MGM) unveiled, United Artists Releasing.  The unveiling of United Artists Releasing, is also, an expansion of a current business agreement.

The current business agreement that, is being expanded through the creation of United Artists Releasing, is U.S. theatrical film distribution.  The latter, was originally initiated in December of the year, 2017.  Both parties, Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) and Annapurna, decided to declare the first year a success.  As a result, both parties solidified and expanded, the current agreement.  The end result, of the previously mentioned, is United Artists Releasing.  In an effort to further enhance the distribution capabilities, a distribution team from Orion Pictures, will join United Artists Releasing.  The first objective is to navigate the movie distribution process for tent pole feature films, lower budget genre films and auteur driven movies.  Auteur driven movies, is another way of saying, filmmaker created.  The second objective is to work with third-party filmmakers.  The effort of the previously said, is to offer a movie distribution option that, is outside the traditional studio system.  The third objective is to build upon the success of the first year.  The first year success, of Annapurna and MGM’s business agreement, is best characterized by outstanding theatrical distribution of 8 feature films.  Creed II (2018), Vice (2018) and If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) are 3 of the previously noted 8 feature films; which were distributed by the joint agreement between MGM and Annapurna.

Jonathan Glickman is the President of MGM Worldwide Motion Picture Group.  Through a press statement, Mr. Glickman said the following.  “We are excited to evolve our partnership and are honored to carry out projects under United Artists’ remarkable legacy established over the last 100 years.  Most notably, we are thrilled to welcome the Bond franchise home to United Artists, with the release of Bond 25 next year.”  Jonathan Glickman also said.  “The United Artists brand is a natural fit, as our joint venture was founded around the same principle as its namesake:  to help filmmakers maintain financial and artistic control over the marketing and distribution of their diverse slate of films.  The venture’s forward-thinking strategic marketing and distribution team will continue to pursue that mission as we expand the partnership.”  Megan Ellison is the Founder and the Chief Executive Officer of Annapurna Pictures.  Through a press statement, Ms./Mrs. Ellison said the following.  “I could not be more excited to have the opportunity to expand this releasing venture under the iconic banner that is United Artists.  Annapurna was founded with a very similar intent as the original UA in 1919—to provide a home for artists and their creations in hopes of moving our culture forward.  With the major corporations continuing to consolidate, I believe it is important to have an independent option to provide a sanctuary where we can bring forth transparency, dedication, and fair treatment for all the films we have and will continue to love and service.  Our team is comprised of not only the most talented executives in the business but also true lovers of film and to take on this initiative with MGM is as exciting as it is promising.”
