(Los Angeles, CA) Film L.A. is the official non-profit organization of the City of Los Angeles, and, the County of Los Angeles. Additionally, it is the official film office for the greater Los Angeles, California U.S.A. area. The objective is to streamline the on-location filmmaking process, in order, to have a thriving economy derived from film and television production. The previously said, is accomplished through collaborative work, with the content creators. The collaborative work includes expedited permit processing, comprehensive community relations and film policy analysis. Recently, Film L.A. released its latest report. The report is entitled, The 2018 Television Report. Through its released report; Film L.A. provides an overview of the production landscape for U.S.A. based television series, and, new television projects. Overall, the State of California is first, when it comes to television production.
California being in first place, when it comes to television production, is based on a two year study. Through the study, of the past two years, Film L.A. discovered the following. It discovered that, 467 live action scripted television series were produced, by U.S.A. based movie studios. These television series, were also intended, for the domestic market. The total of 467 live action scripted television series, is considered to be a dramatic increase, according to The 2018 Television Report. The basis for this claim, is found in the data for digitally distributed television series. Since the production year 2010-11; Film L.A. calculates that the production, specifically for, digital distribution has increased. 2,314% is the exact amount, by which, the production of digitally distributed television series has increased; interestingly enough. The latter is due to the fact that, digital streaming services have experienced a dramatic rise in popularity. Paul Audley is the President of Film L.A. Through a press statement, Mr. Audley said the following. “This report highlights the incredible economic value that television production creates, and helps explain why California’s many competitors are eager to win this business.”
Returning to the State of California, and according to the released report, 176 out of the 467 live action scripted television series were filmed in California. The latter, is calculated at 38%, for the overall television making activity. Additionally, Film L.A. estimates that the latter carries with it, a substantial economic impact. The economic impact, for the State of California, is reported to be $6.8 billion USD. Furthermore, Film L.A. also estimates that the $6.8 billion dollars, is for every year of this two year study. According to, The 2018 Television Report, the remaining 291 live action scripted television series where filmed across a wide ranged field; of filming locations. Specifically, 21 other states of the U.S.A., where represented in the 467 total number. Additionally, there are 33 foreign countries, in the 467 total number, of live action scripted television series. For the new television projects category, the State of California is first. For the production year 2017-18, Film L.A. reports that a total of 159 new television projects were started. Of the total 159 new television projects, 65 were filmed in California. For those 65 television projects; 21 were one hour shows, whilst, 44 were half-hour shows. Incidentally, the State of New York finished in second place, with 21 new television projects. The Province of British Columbia, in the Country of Canada, finished in third place with 17 new television projects. The Province of Ontario, in the Country of Canada, finished in fourth place with 10 new television projects.
To end, Mr. Paul Audley concluded his press statement by stating. “Los Angeles is best equipped to support these projects long-term, and our efforts are focused on keeping the environment a welcoming one for filming.” As previously stated, Film L.A. recently released its latest report.
