The Hotel Movie Colony Hotel Re-Opens

          The name of this hotel, comes from the City of Palm Springs’ historical “Movie Colony” neighborhood.  The latter, is from the Golden Age Era, of American film history.  Specifically; famed actors and actresses like Cary Grant, Jack Benny, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh built their desert vacation homes in the same neighborhood.  This neighborhood then became characterized by high property walls, thick hedges and scarce sidewalks.  Therefore, the term movie colony was adopted.  Specifically and for the Movie Colony Hotel, its building was designed by architect, Albert Frey.  This occurred in the year, 1935.  The architectural style is considered to be, modernism and minimalist.  For the recently completed renovation project, Frey’s initial design was honored.  Technically, a re-imagination and enhancement, was attempted.  To start; the original two-story townhouses that, make up the hotel building, where re-created to be duplex suites.  Additionally, the rest of the building was re-imagined, in a warmer way.  Warm woods with splashes of color, along with, comfortable sofas and chairs where meticulously placed throughout the common areas.  Furthermore, the swimming pool area received some attention through yellow and white, textile accents.  The latter, achieves two objectives; the first is the warming up of the area, and, the second is an enhanced view of the San Jacinto Mountains.  Paul Darrall is the Owner of Darrall Design Consultants.  Through a press statement, Mr. Darrall said the following.  “The whole premise of revitalizing this property was to make necessary improvements so the hotel re-establishes itself as one of the keynote properties in the Desert.”
