Marvell Technology Group, Ltd. Launches Low Power S.S.D. Controllers

(Santa Clara, CA) By its definition, a solid state drive (S.S.D.), is a solid state storage device.  Typically, the memory function is enabled, through, integrated circuit assemblies.  The end result, is the persistent storage of data, through, the use of flash memory.  Coincidentally; a solid state drive doesn’t have spinning disks, and/or, movable read-write heads.  The latter, is a defining feature of hard disk drives (H.D.D.).  A hard disk drive is the conventional hard drive that; is found in laptop, and, desktop computers.  Recently; Marvell Technology Group, Ltd. announced that, it is at the forefront of edge computing, and, internet cloud data center applications.  Specifically, the aforementioned business revealed that, it has launched a portfolio of S.S.D. controllers.  Additionally, these S.S.D. controllers are considered to be very low power PCIe Generation 4 NVMe solid state drive controllers (S.S.D.).

Marvell’s lowest powered PCIe Generation 4 NVMe solid state drive controllers, are the following.  The Marvell 88SS1321, the Marvell 88SS1322 and the Marvell 88SS1323 officially make up the portfolio of S.S.D. controllers.  However and returning to, S.S.D., the aforementioned is capable of using conventional hard disk drive (H.D.D.) interfaces.  Additionally, it is also capable of using specific advantages of flash memory.  Interfaces, form factors, newer version interfaces and form factors that exploit flash memory; are included in the previously stated.  In reference to, H.D.D., a solid state drive can be a drop-in replacement.  In reference to, interfaces and form factors, the following are good examples.  mSATA, M.2, U.2, EDSFF, NVMe and PCI Express are the examples.  NVMe is a high performance, non uniform memory access (N.U.M.A.); interestingly enough.  Additionally, it is optimized, so that, it can be used in a highly scalable storage protocol.  The goal is to connect the host, to the memory subsystem.  PCIe is the acronym for, peripheral component interconnect express.  Additionally, it is an interface standard for connecting high speed components.  Furthermore, it is basic on all PC motherboards.  There are always a few PCIe slots that, can be used.  The use includes adding GPUs, RAID cards, Wi-Fi cards or S.S.D. add-on cards.  GPUs are also known as video cards, or, graphics cards.

Returning to, the portfolio of S.S.D. controllers, the aforementioned are designed to use the lowest amount of power that is possible.  Additionally, they are also designed to be used in higher performance next-generation, data centers and edge devices.  Specifically for edge devices; the intended use is artificial intelligence (A.I.), and, 5G.  Overall; the Marvell 88SS1321, the Marvell 88SS1322 and the Marvell 88SS1323 are highlighted by the following.  Unparalleled performance, ultra compact footprint, system on a chip (SoC) design, groundbreaking storage IP, data center use, notebook use, tablet computer use, gaming use and edge computing platform use are the features that; highlight Marvell’s portfolio of S.S.D. controllers.

Chris Kilburn is the Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Client Channel at AMD.  Through a press statement, Mr. Kilburn said the following.  “AMD recently introduced the world’s first PCIe 4.0 ready desktop PC platform, the 3rd Generation AMD Ryzen processor and AMD X570 chipset for socket AM4.  We are delighted with the Marvell DRAM-less PCIe Gen4 SSD controller helping bring the increased bandwidth and performance required to elevate the user experience with next generation computing devices.”  JP Yang is the General Manager of SSD BU at Union Memory a Lenovo Company.  Through a press statement, Mr. Yang said the following.  “As a strategic storage partner of Lenovo, we are dedicated to transforming our customers’ experience with technology innovation.  The PCIe Gen4 host interface, high-speed 1200MT/s NAND flash interface and low power 12nm technology of the Marvell SSD controllers support our vision of bringing significant value with superior power-performance in small form factors, low latency for fast wake-up and prolonged battery life operation.”

Arie Tal is the Senior Director of Business Development for the Consumer and Components Group at Micron Technology.  Through a press statement, Mr. Tal said the following.  “We have worked closely with Marvell to validate Micron’s high-performance, 96-layer NAND components supporting 1.2 GT/s interface with its PCIe Gen4 SSD controller family.  Marvell’s optimized controllers will allow our mutual customers to deliver innovative, low-power, small form factor SSD solutions for emerging data center, edge computing and PC OEM use cases.”  Hiroo Ohta is the Technology Executive at Toshiba Memory Corporation.  Through a press statement, Mr. Ohta said the following.  “Marvell and Toshiba Memory Corporation have a strong established relationship delivering best-in-class SSD offerings for markets that span client to cloud data center.  We believe Marvell’s PCIe Gen4 controller product family combined with our TLC, QLC and XL-FLASH BiCS FLASH Gen. 4 devices will enable new edge and data center storage architecture solutions utilizing flash technology.”

To end, Marvell Technology Group, Ltd. (NASDAQ:  MRVL) did release a press statement.  Nigel Alvares is the Vice President of Marketing for the Flash Business Unit at Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. of the Marvell Technology Group, Ltd.  Through a press statement, Mr. Alvares said the following.  “Marvell’s latest family of storage controllers has been architected to optimally address edge computing and data center pain points of power-performance and capacity-performance.  With today’s launch, we’re once again demonstrating Marvell’s leadership in storage, delivering the industry’s first 4-Channel PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD controllers with the industry’s lowest power consumption that will help revolutionize SSD solutions for the data economy.”  As previously stated; Marvell Technology Group, Ltd. recently announced that, it is at the forefront of edge computing, and, internet cloud data center applications.  Specifically, the aforementioned business revealed that, it has launched a portfolio of S.S.D. controllers.  Additionally, these S.S.D. controllers are considered to be very low power PCIe Generation 4 NVMe solid state drive controllers (S.S.D.).  Lastly; the Marvell 88SS1321, the Marvell 88SS1322 and the Marvell 88SS1323 officially make up the portfolio of S.S.D. controllers.
