(San
Francisco, CA) Synthetic
Aperture Radar (S.A.R.) is capable of seeing through clouds, smoke, fog and
darkness. Technically, the term
continuous global coverage, can be interchanged, with seeing. In other words, S.A.R. is a type of satellite
that, can provide images of the Planet Earth.
Interestingly, N.A.S.A. is credited with how an S.A.R. satellite is
currently being used. During the decade
of the 1970s, N.A.S.A. used S.A.R. satellites to detect sub-meter changes. These sub-meter changes, occurred on the
images of the surface of the Planet Earth.
Capella Space is a business that has its headquarters office, in the
City of San Francisco, California U.S.A.
Additionally, its current business objective is to take Synthetic
Aperture Radar (S.A.R.), one step further.
The first step towards accomplishing the goal, is hourly S.A.R. coverage
of the Earth. The aforementioned, is
meant to be sold as a service to the government, and, commerce businesses. Recently, Capella Space announced that, it
has been awarded a military contract.
Specifically, the aforementioned business revealed that, it has been awarded
a contract by the U.S. Air Force. This
contract is to adapt its commercial S.A.R. satellite, into, a military
persistent space radar satellite.
The contract to adapt a commercial
S.A.R. satellite for military use, was awarded to Capella Space, under the U.S.
Air Force Space Pitch Day process. The
latter, is only by invitation. First,
the invitation is sent to businesses that already possess, a Small Business
Innovative Research Award (S.B.I.R.).
The invitation to the U.S. Air Force Space Pitch Day, is phase one. Phase two, is receiving a contract from the
U.S. Air Force. Phase three, is when the
contracted business decides to pursue a sole source and unlimited value, phase
three operational contract. The most
recent U.S. Air Force Space Pitch Day, was held on November 5th to
the 6th, 2019. This event was
held in the City of San Francisco, California U.S.A. However and returning to, Capella Space, the
aforementioned business is innovative.
Particularly, what is innovative about Capella Space is, the Capella
36. The latter, is a constellation of
small S.A.R. satellites. Through, the
Capella 36 it is bringing S.A.R. coverage of the Earth, to business clients. Additionally, it is in step with
accomplishing the business objective, of taking S.A.R. one step further. Currently and for potential business clients,
Capella Space; highlights infrastructure monitoring, agriculture and disaster
response & recovery. Specifically;
it aims to show potential business clients that, its proprietary S.A.R. satellites
can accurately capture high resolution images, of the Planet Earth. The resolution of these images,
interestingly, is ½ a meter. The latter,
is from orbit all the way down to the Earth’s surface.
Returning to; the awarded contract,
the aforementioned and as previously said, is to adapt its commercial S.A.R.
satellite, into, a military persistent space radar satellite. The purpose and according to the released
information, is as follows. The purpose
is to be able to further advance, the U.S. Air Force’s virtual reality
software. In turn, the aforementioned
software is hoped will be able to simulate potential adversary scenarios. Additionally; it is also hoped that, it will
be able to support missile defense, and, create predictive intelligence that
can predict foreign threats. As part of
the awarded contract, Capella Space will also provide an in-house analytics
service. The goal is to provide rapid
and automatic insights from the data that, was obtained from Capella Space’s
proprietary, military use converted, S.A.R. small satellite. Additionally, the previously mentioned
insights include change detection, and, object detection. Furthermore, all of the insights become part
of the U.S. Air Force’s virtual reality software.
To end, Capella Space did release
press statements. Lt. General John
“J.T.” Thompson is the Commander of the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile
Systems Center. Through a press statement, Lt. Gen. Thompson
said the following. “The U.S. Air Force
is always working to maintain our leadership as a global technology innovator,
and this contract is a testament to that commitment.” Dan Brophy is the Vice President of
Government Services at Capella Space.
Through a press statement, Mr. Brophy said the following. “Capella will work alongside the U.S. Air
Force to foster collaboration and deliver a product that best suits their
mission needs. Timely SAR data that
presents changes on Earth holds tremendous military value, and we will make
adaptations to meet unique military requirements. Together with the Air Force, we will define
the applications for this data in its hybrid, military and commercial space
architecture.” As previously stated, Capella
Space recently announced that, it has been awarded a military contract. Specifically, the aforementioned business
revealed that, it has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Air Force. This contract is to adapt its commercial
S.A.R. satellite, into, a military persistent space radar satellite. Lastly, this military contract was awarded to
