Tu Simple Expands to 40 Self-Driving Autonomous Trucks


(San Diego, CA) Self-driving semi trucks require, at the minimum, 1,000 meters of perception.  Tu Simple’s trucks have 1,000 meters of perception, as part of, its proprietary 1,000 meter perception system.  The previously said, is to be able to operate safely on the highway, as a self driving autonomous truck.  Additionally, so that driving decisions can be made safely and accurately, by the truck’s computer system.  Recently, Tu Simple made two revelations.  First, it is going to expand its line of self-driving trucks to 40.  The 40 new self-driving semi trucks are expected to be operational by June of the year, 2019.  Second, it also announced a business partnership with, Cummins, Inc.

          The business partnership with Cummins, Inc. (NYSE:  CMI), is to be able to expand its autonomous commercial routes.  These autonomous commercial routes, are driven by self-driving semi trucks.  Additionally, the routes are depot to depot.  Both highway and street driving, is required, for these depot to depot commercial routes.  Currently, Tu Simple has 11 trucks that, are capable of self-driving.  These 11 semi trucks operate in the U.S.A.  It is currently reported that; Tu Simple does three to five fully autonomous trips per year, using three different depot to depot routes, inside the State of Arizona, U.S.A.  As part of the 40 truck expansion, depot to depot autonomous routes will be added; obviously.  These new routes, will be from Arizona to the State of Texas.  Specifically; Cummins, Inc. designs, manufactures and distributes the following.  Engines, filtrations products and power generation products are the Cummins’ products.  Interestingly, Cummins, Inc. is headquartered out of Columbus, Indiana U.S.A.  For Tu Simple’s expansion, the aforementioned business will develop powertrain integration solutions, for Tu Simple’s autonomous technologies.  It is hoped that; Cummins, Inc. will be able to develop an interface, between, powertrains and autonomous systems.  The fruition of the previously said, will ultimately speed up the integration of self-driving autonomous trucks, into the commercial markets.  Morgan Andreae is the Executive Director, Growth Office at Cummins, Inc.  Through a press statement, Mr. Andreae said the following.  “Cummins is a global powertrain leader with expertise in not only engines, but also controls and electronics and we are bringing this technical knowledge to develop a sophisticated interface that can allow powertrains and vehicles to integrate and operate efficiently, effectively and safely.”  Morgan Andreae also said.  “We are pleased to work with TuSimple and other companies across the globe to help bring autonomous vehicle technology to commercial markets.” 

          Ultimately, full integration into the commercial markets is, Tu Simple’s goal.  Technically, it is Level 4 fully autonomous driving solutions.  The previously mentioned, is according to the Society of Automotive Engineers (S.A.E.).  Tu Simple, also cited, as part of its revelation current issues that, the trucking industry is facing.  These issues, are being interpreted as additional motivation.  It is estimated that, the trucking industry is staring down a current shortage of 50,000 drivers.  By the end of the year 2024 the previous figure, is expected to rise up to 175,000 drivers.  The average age of the current truck driver is, 49 years old.  Additionally, the turnover rate at the job site, is believed to be 100%.  According to Tu Simple, the previously noted figures were courtesy of a study that, was conducted by PwC.  Obviously, Tu Simple does aim at revolutionizing the U.S.A.’s trucking industry.  Currently, the U.S.A.’s trucking industry is believed to be a $740 billion USD market.  The revolution will come in the form of, self-driving autonomous semi trucks.

          To end, Tu Simple did release a press statement.  Dr. Xiaodi Hou is the Founder, the President and the Chief Technology Officer of Tu Simple.  Through a press statement, Dr. Hou said the following.  “Exactly one year after debuting our prototype system at CES 2018, we’re now running up to five commercial trips a day in Arizona, expanding our fleet and moving quickly toward our goal of creating the first commercial self-driving truck.  We are making tremendous progress towards the commercialization of our technology and trucking ecosystem with key Tier 1 partners like Cummins.  The viability and power of our autonomous truck solutions is being proven daily on highways and local streets.”  As previously stated, Tu Simple recently made two revelations.  First, it is going to expand its current line of 11 self-driving autonomous trucks to 40.  The 40 new autonomous semi trucks are expected to be operational by June of the year, 2019.  Lastly and second, it also announced a strategic business partnership with, Cummins, Inc.
